iPhone XS – The Pros & Cons

After the success of iPhone X, Apple released iPhone XS on September 2018. As the name infers, it’s an upgrade to the iPhone X having same overall design and major features, with a handful of big improvements and new and better enhancements. Let’s talk firmly about the iPhone XS in detail and have a close look at the pros and cons of it.

iPhone XS – Pros

iOS 12

Using the latest iOS 12 with the iPhone XS, it provides a smooth and enjoyable user experience. The new iOS also has several clever new features, including:
Group notifications – Notifications are lumped into groups, so when you check your device after an hour or two, you won’t be flooded with an extensive rundown of notifications.
Screen Time – This feature enables you to monitor how much time you spend on your smartphone, what applications take up most of your time, etc.

A12 Bionic chipset

This is a standout amongst the most powerful chipsets of any smartphone, giving snappier responses to basic tasks like web browsing or sending messages. In any case, the power of this faster chip is best felt when running applications and games using augmented reality (AR). AR applications still have a way to go in enhancing its visual polish, yet the A12 chip is prepared for their future.

Face Recognition

Apple’s Face ID technology may not be as quick at unlocking your phone as a password or fingerprint scan, but Apple claims the facial recognition features are quicker and more accurate than before. And it’s unbelievably secure.

4 GB RAM

The iPhone XS has 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. This is useful throughout the OS, yet especially when there are lots of web pages open or you constantly have to jump between active applications.

Dual SIM

The Apple iPhone XS is a Dual-SIM (GSM and GSM) smartphone that accepts Nano-SIM and e-SIM.

Tougher Glass Case

iPhone XS is properly made with stainless steel frame and glass protected with scratch-resistant glass, oleophobic coating, making it harder and tougher against accidental drops. It is also progressively waterproof – IP68 up to 30 minutes in 2 meters of water, so there is never stress over spills or getting caught in a storm.

Fast Wireless Charging

Instead of increasing the wattage supported by wireless charging, Apple has improved the technology they already have implemented in the previous releases of smartphones.

The iPhone XS has tighter coils internally that support quicker and more efficient wireless charging on existing 7.5W chargers. Best yet, there is no need to upgrade the Qi charger you already have it.

Improved Screen

While the resolution (2436 x 1125) and pixel density (458 pixels per inch) on the XS are like its predecessor, there more colors because of the enhancement of the dynamic range of its display.

Improved Storage Capacity

Apple has come up with improved storage capacity 512GB / 256 GB / 64 GB.

Improved Camera

iPhone XS has the same dual 12MP sensor as the iPhone X. But pixel size has been increased for better low-light photographs. The Smart HDR (high dynamic range) mode also improves the details and brightness of your photographs.

iPhone XS – Cons

Problem with the Face ID

The problem with the Face ID is that it isn’t appropriate for enough scenarios as the Touch ID fingerprint scanner was. Face ID doesn’t work well in low light and at times when it’s slow, awkward, or difficult to point your phone at your face — like when you are sitting and you want to check a notification or you’re sitting at a stoplight and you want to change playlists on a music application.

Incomplete Touch ID Features

Touch ID doesn’t work well when your hands are wet or dirty or when you’ve got a pair of gloves on. Thus, making it difficult to use it at such situations.

Not Handy

The bigger size of device and large cases are difficult, even impossible to handle with one hand.

Very Pricey

iPhone XS is very expensive as compared to other iPhone models.

Headphone Jack

iPhone XS does not support a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Shorter Battery Life

New iPhones offers a non-removable battery and have shorter battery life than last year’s iPhone X:

  • iPhone XS Max – 10 hours 38 minutes
  • iPhone XS – 9 hours 48 minutes
  • iPhone X – 10 hours 49 minutes

No FM Radio

iPhone XS does not offer FM Radio feature.

 No Wi-Fi Direct Support

iPhone XS does not provide support for Wi-Fi Direct.

No memory card slot

No microSD slot is present to expand the memory.

No wireless charger

Fast / wireless charger is not included with the iPhone box which adds extra price and is pricey.

The Verdict

The iPhone XS is still Apple’s most powerful phone to date, with faster speeds and improved cameras. However, iPhone XS is expensive, the storage options are ridiculously overpriced, you need to purchase quite a few accessories as well, yet those unpleasantries couldn’t stain the Apple iPhone XS. Its future seems shining bright and it’s probably breaking some records for Apple.

The only concern is how this phone will change the trends in phone pricing, which will be reshaped reaching new heights in the months to come.

Data Privacy – How to protect your Devices and Passwords

Privacy of data is critical in this advanced age where everything is interconnected and can be accessed and utilized effortlessly. The potential outcomes of our private data being to a great degree vulnerable are genuine, which is the reason we require data protection.

Data protection is the need to safeguard and ensure any personal data, gathered by any organization, from being accessed by any third party. It is a piece of Information Technology that enables an individual or an organization to determine what data within a system can be shared to other people and which ought to be restricted.

In this computerized age, we apply the idea of data privacy to critical personal information, also known as personally identifiable information (PII) and personal health information (PHI). This includes Social Security numbers, health and medical records, financial data, including bank account and credit card, even basic information such as phone numbers, full names, addresses and birth-dates.

For a business, data privacy goes past the PII of its employees and customers. It also incorporates the data that enables the organization to operate, whether it’s proprietary research and development data or financial information that shows how it’s spending and investing its money.

Data Breach Incidents

In the past many data breach incidents took place which resulted not only financial loss of any organization but also personal data loss of the individuals. 2018 proved to be a tough year for the people at Facebook and Google. Since the beginning of 2018, Facebook has been under flame for a breach of trust and security of their users’ personal data. Google has been no exception as well.

Back in March, it was declared that data of 87 million Facebook users was sold and misused with the user’s consent, also known as the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Later, the company was associated with what might be the largest Facebook hack in its 14-year history, where more than 50 million users have been victimized (quick update: Facebook’s user base comprises of 2 billion users, which makes 2.5% of its user base). Note: even Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s account was hacked.) This attack is known as the largest breach in Facebook’s history.

Google has apparently also joined the bandwagon. A software glitch in the social platform Google+ has enabled developers to access Google+ profile data between 2015 and March 2018.

Any connections that use Facebook login should have been broken when Facebook reset the access tokens of the affected users. Google, then again has likewise expressed that it has found no evidence of glitch misuse. Google has announced to shut down Google+ permanently as a measure of assurance.

Protecting your Devices and Data

The first line in securing your data is you. Here are some tips to secure your personal devices, networks, credit cards and social networking accounts.

Data protection for Devices and Networks

  • Encrypt your data
  • Backup your device data
  • Be selective with the applications you install
  • Stay away from open WI-FI networks
  • Keep your device refreshed with the software updates
  • Secure your wireless network at your home or business
  • Use anti-virus or anti-malware protection
  • Don’t store passwords within your laptop or mobile device
  • Enable remote location and device-wiping
  • Set a pass code for your mobile device
  • Wipe devices and set to factory defaults before donating or discarding

Protecting your credit

  • Sign when using debit cards, don’t enter your PIN
  • Sign up for email and text alerts for transactions
  • Review your statements regularly
  • Keep an eye out for small transactions
  • Never offer your PIN code
  • Avoid sensitive transactions on public Wi-Fi networks
  • Shop on familiar websites

Protecting your data on social networking

  • Don’t share too much personal information on social networking platforms
  • Customize your social networking privacy settings
  • Check your privacy settings consistently
  • Set Two-Factor Authentication for your social media accounts
  • Avoid suspicious website links
  • Secure your web browsers
  • Don’t download files from untrustworthy websites
  • Don’t save passwords in your browser
  • Use ad blockers for your browsers

Importance of Secure Password

The average person spends roughly 11 hours online every day. From banking to chatting, there’s no limit to all the tasks we can perform online. What’s disturbing, is that the majority’s passwords are extremely simple, and this leaves them to vulnerable to having their accounts hacked. Mostly, individuals persuade themselves that their email password is not important because they don’t receive anything. But the email address is connected to your bank account which can give access to your bank information easily. According to the statistics on passwords:

  • Around 90% of passwords generated by users are vulnerable to hacking.
  • 10,000 of the most common passwords (such as, ‘qwerty’, ‘1234’, or ‘password’) can access 98% of all accounts.
  • In 2011 hackers stole 77 million Sony PlayStation Network passwords.
  • In 2012 4000,000 Yahoo! Email addresses were hacked.
  • In 2014 five million Gmail passwords were hacked and released online.
  • In 2015 the IRS got in trouble for still using the password “password” for secure systems.

So, the more complex and strong your password is, the greater security it provides for your account. Remember that your account is where you store a great deal of sensitive data that you don’t want to have stolen. Hence the stakes are very high. Therefore, taking care of your account password is crucial. So, here’s how to create a strong password for your devices and accounts:

  • Use long texts, weird strings that neither computers nor individuals can figure.
  • Use a combination of lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers and special characters (such as: ?,*! @ <) for your passwords
  • Avoid using any obvious combinations such as 12345, blends of phone numbers and addresses, or your personal information
  • Never incorporate any string with successive numbers or letters
  • Don’t use single words found in dictionary.
  • Avoid using words found on your social media pages such as birthday, name of child, sports team, pet’s name etc.
  • Don’t save passwords or use “remember me” on public computers
  • Don’t use the passwords that have been used in the past
  • Change your password regularly (approximately every 90 days).
  • Don’t use same password for multiple accounts.
  • Use a password manager tool, such as using Roboform, 1Password, TeamsID, so that you can have an alternate random password for each account, without you having to remember them all.

Password Security Measures

Passwords are undoubtedly basic to security, but they are not the only method that can be used to protect one’s systems and devices. Notwithstanding making a good password, people should learn how to protect it and use it wisely. This implies never sharing it and, if unable to remember it, keeping the written copy in a secure location.

Other security measures outside of passwords incorporate only providing personal information on websites that are encrypted. An encrypted website can easily be recognized by the presence of https at the beginning of the Web address. Computer security software is also critical when it comes to securing computers, and both security software and the firmware on mobile devices should be regularly updated.

Dell G7 7588 – The best Budget Gaming Laptop?

Dell has been doing a great job when it comes to gaming laptops and budget gaming laptops. The company had announced the Dell Inspiron 7577 last year. The laptop made it to the top of the list for almost every tech reviewer. This year, Dell released a predecessor of the 7577 and is being called the Dell G7 7588. The G7 doesn’t come under the Inspiron series anymore, it is a separate lineup by Dell and has improved quite a bit. Let’s have a comprehensive review of what it brings to the table.

Dell G7 – Aesthetics and Design

The Dell G7 has two color options, the first if a combination of white and blue and the second one is a combo of black and red. The white and blue have managed to attract many people. The outside of the laptop has the premium soft touch to it.

The Air vents are designed aerodynamically at the back of the laptop to vent out the extra heat during extreme gaming sessions. Overall, the laptop manages to remain cool always and doesn’t allow for any throttling.

Dell G7 – Build Quality

Build quality is improved from last year, it was great last year but it has been improved this year. The chassis has been reinforced not too much flex as you press down on the keyboard deck which is outstanding for a laptop that is predominantly plastic.

The screen hinge has never been problematic even on the 7577, but it is even better this year. It feels stiffer and more robust than the previous version. The keyboard lighting blue and we are glad they didn’t go with the red light because that would have destroyed the aesthetics on this. It would have been great if it had a white back-lit because blue is a little more fatiguing on your eyes. Imagine using this on max brightness and using it late at night, it would be a little tiring.

Dell G7 – Performance and Display

The screen now has slightly smaller bezels from the previous version and the panel is a much nicer one. The AUO63ED come with 60 hertz frequency out of the box, but it can theoretically be overclocked to a 100fps, but again that will void the warranty.

The ports on the laptop are standard with an addition of the thunderbolt 3 port which supports 4 lanes of PCIe. The back of the laptop is protected with a single screw and is extremely easy to access and upgrade.

The performance on the laptop is great it comes with a 6-core i7-8750H 8th generation processor. An awesome choice for multi-core gaming experience and you can pick from one of the three graphic units, namely the GTX 1050, GTX 1050 Ti and the GTX 1060 Max-Q.

Processor Intel Core i7-8750H 6-Core Memory 8GB/16GB DDR4
HDD 256GB SSD OR (128GB SSD+1TB HDD) Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
Display 15.6” Full HD IPS, Anti-Glare Battery 56 WHr
Connection Bluetooth/ Wi-Fi / USB OS 64-bit Windows 10 Pro

Dell G7 – Conclusion

The keyboard on the G7 is decent especially considering the price tag on the machine. The touch pad has not changed it has the Windows Precision Drivers with a plastic surface, the tracking experience is nice and the button mechanics are nice.

The only downside to this machine is the form factor and the size of the laptop. The bezels are still big and the overall size is also huge. In a time when companies are moving towards a smaller sized gaming laptop this one is taking another route.

LG G7 – A Detailed Overview

May 12, 2018 LG finally announced their flagship phone, the LG G7 which was rumored for a release early 2018 but here we are in mid-2018. The tech giant has come up with an amazing phone with some key features that will make the phone shine against its competitors.

LG G7 – Display

The G7 comes with a 6.1 inch display with a small bezel at the top and the bottom. The edges  are curved to give it that trendy and modern look. There is a notch at the top which is inspired by the iPhone X and is one of the divisive things about the phone. The notch at the top doesn’t make sense. Some phones make use of the bezel, like the iPhone X where there is no bezel around the screen of the phone. In this LG G7, there is a bezel at the bottom which voids the reason for having a notch at the top. It feels like LG put in that notch for aesthetics, but it doesn’t make justice to the phone.

Several Chinese manufacturers have added the notch at the top, but one cannot blame them because of their limitations when it comes to having a design teams. In case of LG, it is rather disappointing and they have been innovative with their phones in the past.

LG did add a software tweak by giving away an option to hide the notch with a feature in the settings. For this, the blacks should be black to away the feeling that there is no notch and it does that on-point. The screen on the LG G7 is amazing, it is a 1440 panel and is similar in quality to the Galaxy S9.

The LCD panel produces an amazing quality and it is “the” best display available on a smartphone in the market.

LG G7 – Speakers

The speaks on the G7 are one of the strongest features the phone offers. The speaker is at the bottom and it is loud, period. LG claims that it is 10 times louder than its competitors. It used a resonance chamber design to improve the bass levels. Fortunately, LG has kept the 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom so if you are an audiophile you should consider the G7.

LG G7 – Camera

The camera uses two lenses, both are 16mp with an aperture of F/1.6 and F/1.9 respectively. Of the lens is a wide angle which is phenomenal. Having a wider-angle lens on a phone is one of the features that we really appreciate.

The camera has a built-in AI feature. It analyzes the scene it is looking at then adjust the camera settings to best optimize the shot. The features works like a charm and it is fast enough to detect the object in front of the camera.

LG G7 – Performance and Overall

LG has added an extra button at the side which activates the Google Assistant. You cannot remap it but it can be disabled. Like that of Samsung’s Bixby button, but it launches the Google Assistant.

It is powered by the Snapdragon 845 and ip60 water proofing would give away a very 2018 flagship feeling. With a finger print scanner at the back and the iris scanner. The battery has a capacity of 3000mAh which isn’t big but because the screen uses 30% lesser energy than the previous phone, it should be decent.
